Azazel had given up on life. With alcohol filling the constant void inside, he had forgotten the things that matter. That is, until he received a call from a man naming himself Lucifer, who wished to restore that long-lost will to live. Now Azazel must follow his orders and manage to survive one entire day. How hard can that be?

Excerpt from Azazel

Midnight: Lori

12:00 AM precisely, the cell phone sounded next to Thomas, pulling the shroud of alcohol-induced unconsciousness away. An unusually thin man, he had starved his body with a nutrient lacking diet. His primary calories were consumed from the gut punishing disgustingly cheap Dimitri Gin. With an unkempt beard and a holey shirt, Thomas had become a drunk just like his father, a man he questioned many times early in life how he had fallen so far down into a depressive hole. Before turning 40, he never imagined becoming just like the old man. After 40, life seemed to become a waste. He had become an empty vessel just waiting apathetically for the Grim Reaper to take him to whatever exists in the great beyond.

Thomas looked at the screen, surprised that anyone remembered his number. It had been a long time since a call came in beyond the normal working hours, especially after he lost the long-time machinist job which was his sole source of socialism. His conversations typically revolved around tech talk, making it difficult for people outside the industry to understand. Outside of work, he rarely talked with anyone due to this issue, even his family.

Even more surprising was the familiar Alice in Chains song, “Down in a Hole” playing as his ringtone. It was one of his favorite early-90’s era grunge style songs. He hadn’t set it. In fact, he couldn’t even remember what song he’d previously used.

“Hello,” Thomas answered, with a half-asleep tone.

“Hello, Azazel.” a digitally scrambled voice spoke. Determination of its identity was impossible.

This startled Thomas. In his normal life, he had never used that name, but in the computer world, Azazel was quite frequently adopted as a screen name. He’d picked the pseudonym only because he liked the way it was spelled and how it flowed from the mouth. He had a vague idea of its religious origin, but didn’t care enough to research it thoroughly.

“Who is this?” Thomas asked, heart pounding and obviously disturbed by the breach of privacy.

“Settle down, Azazel, my little scapegoat,” the mysterious voice said. “I have a task for you.”

“Hold up, tell me who you are, since you know who I am.”

“How about…Lucifer? You are the scapegoat. I am the devil at your side.”

Azazel could almost feel the person smile through the phone as he uttered the analogy. At least a gender could now be given to the mystery person. “Scapegoat?”

“Please tell me you know a little something about your screen name before we progress?” Lucifer toyed.

He thought back and still couldn’t recall any important details. “Can I look it up?”

“It’s not wise to choose a name with such meaning without understanding its origins. Besides, there’s no time. I have something for you to do.”

“Me?” Azazel was confused. “It’s the middle of the night. I don’t think I should be driving.”

“Make your way to the Court Street Bridge in downtown Cain City, the one that crosses over the railroad tracks, by 12:10. If you do this, your evening will be done. I’ll leave you be and nothing else follows. If you don’t arrive by that specific time, well, your night will become very, very interesting.”

Thomas looked at the time on his phone which read 12:03. He had seven minutes to navigate across town, approximately four miles. Even with the target location being a straight shot down Route 17, the road that feeds into Court Street, many obstacles could potentially barricade his path.

“Hold up, man, I can’t do that! Why the fuck would I just get up and go?”

Amazon Author Profile

Author Description: Jack Thanatos is a visionary of a fictional existence, a specter of Reality. He mentally harbors the world around him, watching the strings pulled and writes a supernatural infused version of what he sees. Real life has a way of getting away from us with the daily grind forcing us away from what we truly wish for ourselves.

Jack merely wishes to bring the world back to one of simpler means, a world governed by ancient gods and new deities pulling the strings that normal folks shouldn't naturally have the ability to even know about. A world where the Dreaming and Reality can work together as friends with benefits. A world where Cyberspace is a place that can be physically traversed.

The Djinn universe will encompass each and every entry into Jack's anthology. The characters will work within the same limitations (or lack thereof). The hope is that once this is all done, every reader will look at the fragile existence around them with a slightly more skeptical attitude, that maybe these beings could really be hanging out behind the scenes.

"I spend all my time in The Dreaming and The Netherworld, making my way through the Djinn lifestyle. It is my dream one day to reach the forbidden realms of Tartarus and Machina, but until I learn my way, I'll have to stumble through the daily obstacles."
