HBS Author’s Spotlight – Class of April 2016

This month we have a group of interesting writers with worlds of knowledge and expertise. The author interviews are a MUST read.

Be sure to check out what they have coming next for their readers. I try to pick authors who are interesting studies and ask them unique questions for our Q/A section.

Check out the Showcase feature of the HBS Author's Spotlight. I have included those authors in this class. Also, we have added the Author Bundles we have posted this month.

Thanks to the following outstanding authors for a great month. Here is a summary of our April 2016 crew.

Author Description:
Braxton DeGarmo spent over 30 years in Emergency and Family Medicine, both in and out of the military, before retiring to focus on writing in 2014. Many of the incidents in his books are based on real occurrences, people, and experiences in his own life, such as learning to escape a water crash in a helicopter. And the technologies described in his books are all current... and possible.

Fortunately, he did not pull the events of the main plots from his personal life, although they are issues that affect us all. Human trafficking, medical kidnapping, the insanity of Washington, DC, and other injustices have become the premises used for his stories.

He writes from a Judeo-Christian worldview, but he writes his stories to reach and entertain people of all backgrounds. Now, he just needs to find a way to fit his experience with the incredible shrinking woman of Ft. Campbell,KY into a story. Hmmm…

Interview Excerpt

Next: Actually, A Zealot’s Destiny came out on February 29th. The story, in follow up to my book, The Silenced Shooter, centers on an attack on the British Royal Family. I mean, really, who doesn’t love the Royal Family? Well, a global group called The Assembly evidently.

Social media: Although I have a small platform on Twitter, my main social platform is Facebook. To be honest, I’ve yet to have any readers interact with me on Twitter, which is supposedly its main strength. Perhaps they’re all shy, but until I do, Twitter won’t claim much of my time. Facebook, however, has been crucial to building a following and the reader groups on Facebook have been my main source of new readers as well as increasing insanity.

Book signings: I do book signings throughout the year, although most are in the St. Louis area. As an indie author, it’s difficult to travel and set up signings, although I have made it as far away as Washington, Arkansas (pop. 106) for a weekend of signings.

Covers: I work hand-in-hand with my cover designer. In fact, the photography used in several of my covers is my own. I also enjoy getting my readers engaged in my covers, but that has had its pros and cons. In the end, you can’t create a cover by committee and having too much reader input ends up feeling like that. Yet, on the positive side, I held a contest on Facebook for the winner to be on my cover for Rescued and Remembered. Over a dozen women dared to enter, and after narrowing the field to six, I allowed my Facebook fans to vote. Fortunately, they picked the same image we would have chosen, a fact that attests to the strength of that image.

Sets: So far, MedAir Beginnings has been a disappointment. The idea behind the bundle was to give readers a way to read the first two stories of my series back to back because book two, Rescued and Remembered, has a direct take-off from book one, Looks that Deceive. They really should be read in order. The subsequent books of the series, although playing on the characters and events of the previous books, could be read out of sequence if someone was "forced" to do so. However, readers have not been quick to accept the combo. I hope to change that with a promotion on May 6th through eReader News Today.

Giveaways: I’ve had a great experience in giving away books. I’ve given books to reviewers, libraries, and more. Obviously, my goal for doing so was to improve my discoverability. I’m new to the publishing scene and I self-publish. Few readers have ever heard of me, so giving away books is part of marketing. The first book of my series, Looks that Deceive, has been “perma-free” since July 2015 and has remained in the top fifteen of free medical thrillers on Amazon ever since. The only obstacle I faced in giving away books was doing the end-run required to get Amazon to price match my $0 cost for that first book. Leave it to Amazon to add more hoops to jump through than is necessary.

Reader list: ...I maintain one and I use social media to build that list. My newsletters are sent out only when there is news of an upcoming book or new events. So, yes, it goes out at least often enough to remind people of who I am.

Newsletter: My newsletter’s objective is simply to inform my readers of new books, events, contests, and such. The newsletter itself hasn’t been a way of building that list, and I can’t say that I’ve seen a direct correlation between a newsletter going out and a sales spike.

Reviews: I sought professional reviews in the past and Publishers Weekly turned me down both times, lol. What can I say? I’m an indie author and it was a long shot. I do look for reviewers in a couple of Facebook groups and have been pleased with the results. I ask for and expect total honesty, and have been pleased that my stories have been well received.

Author Description:
Rhoda D'Ettore was born in Woodbury, New Jersey, into a family of 5 siblings--which has provided her with plenty of comical material. She began working at the United States Postal Service at 25 years old, and over the past 15 years has accumulated many humorous stories about situations that the public never gets to know about. Her first ebook, "Goin' Postal: True Stories of a U.S. Postal Worker" was so popular that readers requested it in paperback. Recently, she published the humorous "Goin' Postal" in paperback along with another story entitled, "The Creek: Where Stories of the Past Come Alive". Combining these two into one book may seem strange, as one is humorous and the other is a heart wrenching historical fiction, however, doing so proves to the reader Rhoda D'Ettore's versatility.

Rhoda D'Ettore received her degree in Human & Social Services while working at USPS, has travelled extensively, and loves history. Over the years she has volunteered for several community service organizations, including fostering abused and neglected dogs for a Dalmatian rescue.

Interview Excerpt

Next: I am currently working on Richard's Regrets: Book 2 of The McClusky Series. Tower of Tears was my first novel about Irish immigrants building a life in Philadelphia in the 1820's. I weaved murder, mystery, betrayal, and a touch of romance into a historical novel.

Social media has been the best avenue for me. In the beginning I made the rookie mistake of putting up posts about my books in every group and not interacting with others. I did not want to waste time helping other authors, but I expected them to help me. What I forgot is that authors are readers, and readers are my audience. I began forging friendships and assisting other authors which helped me compile a ton of useful information about publishing and writing. Social friends and authors will often share posts and spread the word for each other, expanding the social media reach of both authors involved. At first I noticed the majority of my sales were from authors I met online, but as they reviewed and blogged about my books, my sales increased.

Book signings: Last year I did quite a few book signings, and I found them to be very successful. I started with my local area and spiraled out. I love doing these because it is an awesome way for readers to get to know me as a person. I have also been to events where other authors just sit there and do not engage the customers. That is a huge mistake. With my first book fair, I had one table cover, a stack of books and a stack of business cards. As people approached I asked them about what they read, not about what I write.

Book trailers: I created the trailers with the free Windows Movie Maker. Because my novels usually focus on real events, it is much easier for me to find images that directly correlate to my work.

Audio books: Audiobooks have been a great way for me to reach a new audience. My first book included “Goin' Postal: True Stories of a US Postal Worker”. This book was well received in the postal community with most of the audiobook sales coming from letter carriers who would listen while they walked their routes.

Short stories: I published the short stories for free on Smashwords as promotional devices hoping they would convert into sales for the books. Unfortunately, there are so many free books on Smashwords and Amazon, I never did see the sales convert.

Bundling a series of novels: When Zodiac Lives came out, I gave the Murder in the Family box set for free. Doing this gave me great exposure for the new book, and I was finally able to make sales in some markets I had not yet reached.

Reader list: I do have a reader mailing list, but respect people enough not to fill their inbox constantly. I usually only send out a mailing when I am giving away free ebooks or have a new release. One of the ways I built my list was by giving away free books on my website if they signed up for my newsletter. I have also done Rafflecopter giveaways which provided me with email addresses.

Authors Helping Authors: Most of the resources I have listed I have indeed used myself, including Xterraweb Editing Services, owned by Kelly Hartigan. When I began writing, I found so many companies willing to scam authors of thousands of dollars for services authors could perform themselves for little to no cost. An awesome side effect of my sharing this information is that author reciprocate by promoting my work. I am constantly testing new ways to promote my books and help authors.

Amazon Author Profile

Author Description:
Luana Ehrlich is a freelance writer, minister's wife, and former missionary with a passion for spy thrillers and mystery novels. She began her series of Titus Ray novels when her husband retired from the pastorate. Now, she writes from an undisclosed location, trying to avoid the torture of mundane housework, grocery shopping, and golf stories. However, she occasionally comes out of hiding to visit with her two grandsons or to enjoy a Starbucks caramel macchiato. She resides in Norman, Oklahoma.

Luana picked up her first adult spy novel when she was eleven years old. Today, she continues to have a fascination for the thriller/suspense genre of fiction, along with a smattering of interest in historical fiction. In addition to being an avid reader, she is also a news fanatic, following events around the world on a daily basis, particularly the Middle East.

Luana has lived in Norman, Oklahoma for the past two decades. Previously, she resided in several different states in the South and Midwest. Along with her husband, she also served as a missionary in Costa Rica and Venezuela.

Occasionally, she reports on the experiences of newly converted Christians for Baptist Press, a national religious news service. At one time, she wrote a weekly column for The Indiana Baptist entitled, "A Story To Tell," describing the testimonies of ordinary people and telling how they became followers of Christ.

Interview Excerpt

Next: The third book in the Titus Ray Thriller Series is Three Weeks in Washington. It will be released in July 2016, but I’m not sure of the exact date yet. In Book III, Titus is faced with a chemical weapons attack on Washington, D. C. As he races across two continents pursuing the Jihadi terrorists, he encounters an Iranian general obsessed with destroying America and exposes an Iranian deep-cover operative with close ties to America’s leaders.

Social media: Until I published my first book, the only social media platform I had was a personal account on Facebook. However, the more I read about promotion and advertising, the more I realized social media was an excellent means of getting the word out about the series. I spent several weeks developing my online presence on Twitter, Pinterest, and Google, in addition to my Author pages on Facebook and Amazon. Then, as I began to tweet and post about my book, I gathered followers.

Book signings: I’ve been involved in numerous book signings, public appearances, and interviews, and I love doing these, because it gives me a chance to meet my readers. I always post these upcoming appearances on my Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/LuanaEhrlichAuthor

Covers: I have the covers professionally designed, and each of the covers uses the same font and style as the first book in the series. I enjoy doing my own mockup design before beginning the process with the designer. Since I have my mind made up beforehand on what I want the cover to look like, I usually don’t seek the advice of others before giving my final okay. I try to follow the pattern of covers used by the thriller/mystery/suspense genre, so I don’t use faces or models on my covers.

Book trailers: I believe it’s difficult to gauge the impact of book trailers, but, since I get the most retweets and clicks when I post them on Twitter and Facebook, I have to believe people enjoy watching them. I did both my book trailers myself using a website called Animoto. It requires a yearly subscription, but it is fairly cheap and the process is very intuitive. After designing them, I post them to my You Tube account. You can view both book trailers here.

Audio books: I used ACX, a division of Amazon, to publish my books in an audio book format on Audible. I made this decision after being asked at book signings if they were available in this format. While ACX makes the process fairly easy to do, it is still a hands-on project because the narrator is chosen by the author through auditions and, when each chapter is completed, the author must give final approval. I’ve been very pleased with the results and I’ve gained many new readers this way. I used the Sound Cloud website to post a sample of one chapter as a teaser on my websites.

Author bundles - Killer Reads: I was approached by another author about being part of this box set, featuring other writers in the Christian mystery/suspense category. I was intrigued by this concept, even though I was the only author who had just written two books, because I thought it might be another way of gaining readership for future books in the series.

Time management: It’s a bit tricky managing my schedule, because I have to wear a lot of different hats during the day, but I’m probably no different than most people in the busy world we live in today. The key is being disciplined and having a schedule, but, at the same time, being flexible enough to realize that interruptions are there for a reason.

Giveaways: I’m enrolled in Amazon’s Select option which means once every three months for a few days I can offer my books at a discount or for free. I’ve often offered my first book for free, but I’ve only offered a discount on my second book by using this option. During those bargain days, I’ve advertised heavily on book sites, and the results have been phenomenal, gaining lots of readers and great reviews. I highly recommend it. The only drawback to using this option is that Amazon doesn’t allow your book to be listed by other publishers. Just recently, I’ve been using the Amazon giveaway option and sponsored giveaways for my first book.

Author Description:
J.A. (Joyce Anne) Schneider is a former staffer at Newsweek. Words and story ideas are always teeming in her head - "a colorful place!" she says. She's a wife, mom, and loves thrillers. Once a Liberal Arts major (French and Spanish Literature), she has become increasingly fascinated with medicine and forensic science. Decades of being married to a physician who loves explaining medical concepts and reliving his experiences means that there'll be medical angles even in "regular" thrillers that she writes

Interview Excerpt

Social media: I enjoy Twitter, take breaks on it at the end of the day, usually. My daughter also tweets a lot on my account, & what’s interesting is that people just…follow. So over four years the number has grown exponentially; i.e., the bigger it gets, the bigger it gets. I’ve met wonderful authors and fellow reading addicts on Twitter…so yes, there is considerable carryover. Mainly, I’m guessing, because I support other authors too.

Covers: Hands on, totally, just me deciding except for the very first cover of EMBRYO. Since then, I love hunting through Shutterstock images, looking for something that connects emotionally with what I feel the book is.

Time management: I’ve a set schedule, about five hours a day, maybe more, usually spanning afternoons. I’m pretty good at screening out life's white noise, plus my kids are grown, which gives me time I never had when they were young - although I know many people who write despite having young children and full time jobs. If what you’re doing is a COMPULSION, those words will get written.

Giveaways: Ah, the power of free! There’s’ no beating it, and again, Bookbub (when they’ll have me; otherwise ENT and Robin Reads. In my experience they’re terrific on a much smaller scale, of course. Mainly I wanted to reach new readers, and such free promotions do. Much better than promotions at 99 cents, btw.

Book launch process: For those first six EMBRYO books I did nothing - just finished them and popped them up onto Amazon. To launch FEAR DREAMS, for the first time I did a Pre-order - just three weeks, but several friends including online author friends and blogger friends agreed to advance-read ARCs and post their reviews on release day. MUCH better, having reviews there from day one.

Reader list: Yes, I’ve a reader list, from the first days of the Embryo books. Mainly I’ve met people on Goodreads; also Twitter and Facebook. To a lesser extend Kboards - you get into conversations there, and writers connect.

Reviews: Nothing beats Goodreads to find readers super generous about reviewing. I still find new friends there; approached several most recently describing FEAR DREAMS and the response was amazing. Also, the back matter of my book is linked back to FEAR DREAMS on Amazon with a bleating plea to review…please? Italics, smile. Really.

Author Description:
I was born in Montreal, Canada, at a very young age, where I still live with my spouse, Joanne, under the watchful eye of Krystalle and Midnight, two black females of the feline persuasion. In a former life, I completed my studies at McGill University and worked in various management capacities for a handful of firms for countless years.

From there, considering my extensive background in human resources and finance, it was a logical leap in my career path to stay home and write crime thrillers.

My first stab at writing was actually in 1995, the result being my first novel, "Vigilante". Two others of the same series followed by 1997 but all three remained dormant until publication in 2009. Since, besides writing a stand-alone, six other thrillers have joined the VIGILANTE series. I also penned "Something's Cooking", a faux-erotica parody and cookbook under the pseudonyms Réal E. Hotte and Dasha Sugah. I'm currently working on "See You in Saigon", the tenth installment of my series. I have to say, I'm enjoying this writing gig.

Other interests besides writing and subtly persuading people to buy my books include reading, making noise with my six guitars, painting (oil and watercolour), cooking (year round though I love the grill in the summer), traveling and planning to work out soon. I've also been known to sleep on occasion.

My books are all creations of a rich and sometimes devilish dream life. Don’t worry—you won’t see yourself in any of my books, but if you do, it’s just a coincidence…

I live in the west Michigan lakeshore area with my high-school sweetheart husband of forty-four years. We have two children, five grandchildren, with two on the way. Oscar, a six-year-old mixed shepherd-type doggie. We have an aged sheep, Spot who lives in a pasture outside my office window with a borrowed companion, Dot.

In a former life, I was a registered nurse who worked in the Operating Room for many years. Prior to nursing school, I was an OR technician. I did my training at Marygrove College, and the clinical experiences we had took place in the Detroit Medical Center. I remember going to a mandatory autopsy in the morgue at Detroit General. All I can say is wow! I was so relieved; the only thing going on the day I was scheduled to observe was a brain dissection. After working in the OR for over thirty three years, I can’t stand the sight of blood now.

Author Description:
My first novel, a psychological thriller called 'Sandman', was published in 2010. It was set in and around Christchurch, Dorset, in the UK, the area where I live. I like to create a strong sense of place, which is why virtually all my fictional settings are in places I know.

I then published an eBook called 'Reality Check: Science Meets Religion'. It came about because having been interested in both science and philosophy, I was bothered about how it seemed most people had to compartmentalise their religion if it seemed at odds with their knowledge of science. At the time I doubted the existence of God, and I wanted to use my research skills to see whether there was a valid logical argument to believe in a God. After years of research, I came to a position where I felt I could show science and religion to be complementary and compatible: merely two different sides of the same 'coin of creation'. So this book provides the evidence and my effort at logical proof.

Next came my second novel 'Flying a Kite', published in 2013. This is principally set in Bath, England, but there are also elements in Italy, California and Tenerife. It was inspired by the same ideas as 'Reality Check', but put into an easy-to-read story. While this might have religious undertones, at the upper level it is contemporary fiction in its own right, and it has as many twists and turns as a thriller.

My third novel, 'The Grave Concerns of Jennifer Lloyd', published in 2016, is a mystery thriller, but is also akin to contemporary fiction because of its character depth. It is again set in the Christchurch and Bournemouth areas, which I know so well.

I am on Twitter as @authorkingsley, so please join me there for daily tweets. If you're not signed-up to Twitter, the tweets are copied across to the home page of my author website: iankingsley.com, where they are easy to view.

3 Explosive Mystery Thrillers

AVAILABLE at Amazon

Three great, full-length, mystery/thrillers from bestselling authors: THE TRIGGER, by L.J. Sellers, introduces Agent Dallas, an undercover specialist and thrill-seeker. THE ADVOCATE is high-rated legal thriller showcasing Attorney Sabre Brown, written by Teresa Burrell. And DARKNESS ON THE EDGE OF TOWN is a long-time bestselling mystery, featuring Detective Laura Cardinal, written by J Carson Black. This ebook trio is an opportunity to try all three series at a great discount price. With unique characters, plots, and settings, this sampler will give you a little bit everything in crime fiction.

In THE TRIGGER, Agent Dallas infiltrates a group of isolated survivalists to find a missing woman. But she discovers the brothers who founded the compound are scheming something far more devious than kidnapping or murder, and soon Dallas has no way to reach her contacts. Can she break free of the bunker and stop their bizarre end-of-world plans?

THE ADVOCATE introduces Attorney Sabre Brown whose attempts to find her missing brother while defending her nine-year-old client collide, forcing her to protect herself and the child from the treacherous truth.

DARKNESS ON THE EDGE OF TOWN features Laura Cardinal, who investigates homicides in small towns and understands that mobile devices can be a conduit into a child’s life from those who intend harm. When Laura investigates the murder of a fourteen-year-old girl found in a park bandshell, she knows immediately what she is up against, but why is she plagued by the abduction of a schoolmate eighteen years before?
