Amazon Author Profile

Author Description:
I marketed a world-class spa when it was still called a gym and did business in China before there were western toilettes at the Great Wall. Then I wrote a book on a crazy dare and found my passion.

Now, I am a USA Today best selling author with more than 20 books to my name - and if you ask me where all those words came from I'd be hard pressed to tell you. All I know is that I wake up with a story in my head and go to bed the same way.

My specialty is legal thrillers and The Witness Series, featuring my beach-rat, volleyball playing attorney Josie Bates and her teenage ward, Hannah, have really captured readers' imaginations. But I also like to stretch the thriller genre a bit. Before Her Eyes, for instance, has a fantasy element intertwined with a murder mystery. Wilde's Gamble is a romantic suspense.

I teach at UCLA Writers Program and work with The Young Writers Conference, a program that helps motivate middle school children to explore the power of words. I am particularly drawn to kids who want to write because both my sons have always had a passion for it. Eric is a playwright and Alex is in film.

When I'm not writing I'm traveling, on a tennis court, working a sewing machine or reading. Thank you so much for taking a look at my author page. You can find out more about me - and leave me a note - at www.rebeccaforster.com

SPOTLIGHT Questions and Answers with the Author

Congratulations on your book: Dark Witness. Do you have another book on the horizon? Can you tell us the timeline for its release and give us a little tease?

The Witness Series has taken a path that surprised even me and I love the twists and turns. I actually thought Dark Witness would end the series, leaving the future of the characters to the readers' imaginations. However, I've received enough mail to know that there needs to be another book. Unfortunately, the next Witness book will have to wait because I have a few projects to finish.

This summer, I'll be publishing the Bailey Devlin trilogy. My mom asked me to write something fun for her. Mom will be ninety-one in September, so Bailey is her birthday present. Hopefully, readers will enjoy seeing my lighter side. Think My Big Fat Greek Wedding. I hope to release the first one in August and the next two by September.

After that, I have a new detective duo - Greg Dalton and Cory Anderson - in a book called Severed Relations. I hope to release before Christmas. I'd love to invite readers to my website, Twitter or Facebook. News of releases will be there. I'll also be posting the first chapter of The Day Bailey Devlin's Horoscope Came True.

There is also a lovely lady who started a Facebook for Fans of Rebecca Forster and I always let those folks know what's going on first thing.

You have a good following on twitter. Since you started before the social media buzz, what impact has social media relationships had on your current success? How did you build your following in your niche? How much has it changed your book launch process?

I can't tell you how odd it is for a long time traditionally published author to go indie and suddenly be faced with things like social media. Promotion used to be rather sedate and predictable, now it's like the Wild West of information. When I first went indie I thought I would gain followers simply by telling people about my books. After a while that was even boring for me. I realized this was like any other social situation. People followed people who had the same interests. I started tweeting about things I love - travel is a big one for me, along with tennis, bargain shopping, sewing, film and reading. What I found is that people who share my passions in life often share my passion for books. In terms of book launch, I confess I need to have a better strategic plan, but I combine my cover reveal with specially priced pre-orders and then keep my fingers crossed that my Tweeple and Facebook friends will be kind enough to pass along both the news and the excitement of a new book.

You have great covers. They carry a theme and your brand with them. How does your book cover creation process work? Do you hand over the basic theme or do you have more of a hands-on approach? Do you get your readers involved in its development?

That question couldn't be more timely. I am especially proud of the Witness Series. I worked closely with Createspace designers on those books. The challenge was to create a sustainable 'look' for 7 current books and who knows how many in the future. I gave the designers information on the main character, place, and theme. They came back with two choices and the one you see here knocked it. We had trouble finding the right image for Forgotten Witness but in the end it turned out to be one of the most beautiful.

Before Her Eyes is a book of mine, it's very personal, and so finding the right artist to create a thrilling yet sensitive cover was my goal. H.O. Charles in England designed that one as well as The Mentor and Character Witness. I tell him what makes the books unique, he sends three or four different concepts and then we work together to build the elements. Before her eyes is a beautiful melding of three images and interesting typeface.

For the Bailey Devlin series I needed someone with a sense of humor and a good eye for a truly female driven genre. Paul Ziomek, a graphic artist/cartoonist out of New Mexico was my choice. He was very open to image suggestions to get the feel of what I was envisioning. Then he came back with truly happy covers that I think embody the tone of these books. When all three are done I think there will be a sense of movement that will make readers realize these are lively, fast paced books.

I have tried to get readers involved in development through Fans of Rebecca Forster on Facebook. Twice I've found that the input was evenly split!

I like the idea of bundling a series of novels. You have put together a set of your novels called Serial Thrillers: 4 Bundled Thrillers. What was the impact on your other sales? What was your main objective in bundling your novels?

I had two thoughts when it came to bundles. The first was that many readers didn't know about my stand-alone books and this was a wonderful way to introduce them. The second thought was that there are many readers who love to literally click from one book to the next and bundling made satisfied that 'serial'. I haven't noticed a huge impact on individual sales. I think I learned that there are those who love bundles and those that prefer to sort of dip their toe in the water when it comes to an author they haven't read.

The Witness Series recently as a promotion for Mother’s Day, and it was huge success. I still offer it on iBooks, Barnes & Noble, and Smashwords.com for Kindle Readers. Amazon has restrictions that make it difficult for me to offer it there but no matter what device readers have, it is available.

What has been your experience in giving your books away free [Hostile Witness]? Have you been involved in any other type of giveaways and how did that work out? What was your main goal in doing this? Did you run into any obstacles?

Offering Hostile Witness free is my way of introducing myself. I always hope a new reader will enjoy that book and look for others I've written. If they don't care for that book, then they have only invested time and I have gained a bit of good will.

I think it's a win/win situation. I have never run into obstacles by doing this. Readers appreciate the gift; I appreciate the time they give my book.

Do you maintain a reader list? What are the methods you use to find your readers and create the list and the relationship? Do you use social media, forums, newsletters and/or support groups to build your list?

I have a modest list. When people contact me through my website I ask if they would like to receive updates. I should probably do more to grow it. Usually, I send a newsletter out when a new book is coming out and catch people up on what I've been doing.

I don't ever want to be annoying by dropping too much in my readers' mailboxes. I do participate in LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter forums now and again when a topic interests me or I think I have something to offer. I learned early that forums, while fun, are terribly time consuming. I am a huge fan of personal contact.

I am pen pals with the first reader who wrote me a fan letter twenty-eight years ago. Since the digital revolution, I have met incredible folks and write to on a regular basis. It's amazing that writing a novel can spark discussions and friendships across the globe. I feel really blessed when people reach out.

You have a great blog. You do a great job keeping readers informed, marketing your books and providing useful information to other writers. What is your primary goal? And where in the world do you find the time to create great novels, take care of the social media and maintain your blog?

I'm a workaholic - but not a crazy one. I come from a corporate background and always feel best when I have a schedule. I have been writing at the same local coffee shop for over fourteen years. My hours are usually 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Then I run errand or sneak in a tennis game and finish the workday at home. Home is where I answer email, write blogs, update the website. My children are grown so it's a little easier now than it was when they were toddlers.

I am pretty passionate regarding blogging for writers. Early in my career, publishing was incredibly competitive. It was hard to break in and information on industry and craft were almost impossible to come by. I promised myself that I would always share what I knew. Today, It is easy to publish but hard to get noticed. It is harder still to turn out a quality novel without the benefit of nurturing by New York editors.

I share what I learned during twenty-five years writing for the big five, I share my contacts and strategies. Digital or traditional, readers still want and deserve a quality novel. The bottom line is this. We could all have the same idea, but none of us will ever write the same book so there is no downside to sharing.

You have published a book in German. Do you have an audience abroad? Does marketing online help in this situation? Do you plan on doing more of your novels in another language?

Even though I handle all my English rights, I still work with Trident Media Group on foreign rights. They negotiated the translation of Hostile Witness in France.

Amazon Crossings approached me to do the German translation. I do have an audience in Germany - I think it's mostly my mother's relatives - but I would love to have more of a presence. I travel so much that it would be cool to combine an overseas trip with a readers' event. I doubt I will ever handle the translation of my books personally. I would have no intelligent way of overseeing the project.

Several of you novels have been converted into audio books. What has been the impact on your regular sales? Has the audio books gained a new audience for you?

Audio books were way out of my comfort zone, so I partnered with a producer and a professional voiceover to create them. I only had two of the Witness Series converted. That voiceover artist no longer reads novels and it will be hard to find a new voice. Still, I'd like to continue with the Witness Series. I think the audio audience is devoted to that medium so the impact on book sales is minimal. I'm actually planning on doing the Bailey Devlin trilogy in audio. The books are shorter and not as intricate in terms of characterization as the Witness Series novels. I think a voiceover will have a ton of fun with them.

I like the section on your website: I LOVE BOOK GROUPS. Tell us how the group idea works? Do you get involved in the discussion groups directly? Has the idea give your sales a boost?

As a newbie, there was nothing more exciting than to be in a room of people who wanted to discuss my books. It was inspiring for me to get feedback; I was often surprised at readers' interpretations of what I'd written. Unfortunately, getting to book groups can be expensive and time consuming. When I was traveling so far that I needed a hotel room to spend the night, I knew I had to set limits. I now try to keep to 50 miles or so from my home - exclusive of the military. Any military book group that I can reasonably attend, I am there. I am always open to ideas of how I can be personally involved with book groups. I did a twitter book group - that went so fast it made my head spin - and one on Facebook. I offer book group guidelines. If a group chooses to read the entire Witness Series, I send a Hermosa Beach gift box of fun things from Josie's turf. If a book group purchases one of the witness books, I also have a small gift - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Witness Series - that also can keep the conversation going. I hope the little and big things I offer will let group readers know how much I appreciate them choosing my work.

I would love to hear from more book groups. Even if I don't hear from them, I hope they do find food for thought in all of my work.

"This story was inspired by a case my husband handled. As a superior court judge he had to sentence a minor to life in prison. It made me wonder how I felt about minors arrested for violent crimes. Are they most vulnerable among us - capable or horrible violence, perceived as adults and yet emotionally still children?"
Rebecca Forster

Nancy Taylor Rosenberg

"Blending complex psychological character portraits with spot-on accurage courtroom drmaa, Forster's riveting legal thriller keeps the plot twists coming until the last, satisfying page."
