Author Description:
Raised in southeastern Iowa, Stacy Green grew up watching crime shows with her parents, so her love of suspense and psychological thrillers is no surprise. She’s fascinated by the workings of the criminal mind and explores true crime on her popular Thriller Thursday posts at her blog, Twisted Minds and Dark Places.

After earning her degree in journalism, Stacy worked in advertising before becoming a stay-at-home mom to her miracle child. She rediscovered her love of writing and wrote several articles for a city magazine before penning her first novel. She shelved the long drama and began working on a suspense book set in Las Vegas, featuring a heroine on the edge of disaster, a tormented villain, and the city’s infamous storm drains that house hundreds of homeless. INTO THE DARK was published by MuseItUp Publishing in 2012.

SPOTLIGHT Questions and Answers with the Author

Congratulations on your book: Ashes and Bone. What do you have on the drawing board next? Can you tell us the timeline for its release and give us a little tease?

Thank you! I have a few things on the horizon. I’ve actually gotten the rights back to my debut novel, Into the Dark, and I am in the middle of heavy edits. It will have a new title and will release in May. I’m actually offering anyone who has proof of payment for the original novel a review copy as well. The audio books for the Delta Crossroads Trilogy will be available this summer, and in late summer/early fall, I am releasing the first book in a new series. It’s much darker – it’s about a CPS worker turned vigilante killer of pedophiles. I’m very excited for it!

You have a good following on twitter. How important have your social media relationships been? How did you build your following in your niche? Did you use forums, newsletters and methods like that?

Honestly, Twitter is hit and miss for me. It’s so hard to really build up a relationship on there, and so much of it is author spam. I’ve really tried to move away from that, and when I do tweet, it’s just random thoughts about my day. I really prefer Facebook for chatting with readers and authors, but G+ is also a good option. I built my following from scratch, and a lot of it is still other writers. I spent a lot of time connecting with them as I learned the craft and made my publishing decisions, and as I publish more books, the organic reader following continues to grow.

Do you do book signings, interviews, speaking and personal appearances? If so, when and where is the next place where your readers can see you? Where can they keep up with your personal contacts online?

I’ve only done two book signings, and I don’t have any planned. Those are tough for indies until you have a really large following. I’m hoping to have something next spring, but I don’t have details. The place to connect with me is online. I’m very active on Facebook, and all of my social media contacts are on my website, www.stacygreen.net. I love chatting with readers, so I’m always happy to hear from them.

You have great covers. They carry a theme and your brand with them. How does your book cover creation process work? Do you hand over the basic theme or do you have more of a hands-on approach? Do you get your readers involved in its development?

Oh, my cover saga! First off, thank you, and I have to give all credit to Melinda Vanlone. She is an amazing artist. My original covers for TIN GOD and SKELETON’S KEY were beautiful, hand painted pictures of the homes featured in them, with a mysterious feel. When Melinda and I started chatting about her doing my typography, I asked her what she truly thought of my covers. They were beautiful, but wrong for the genre. We spent a lot of time looking at the authors in my genre–Lisa Gardner, Gillian Flynn, Tana French–as we came up for the treatment. I do have a street team who helps me make final cover decision. It’s a lot of fun getting them involved.

You have written a Sampler: Twisted Minds: A Stacy Green Mystery Thriller. Can you tell us if they had an impact on the sales of your novels?

Unfortunately, I can’t tell because Amazon never price matched it, so it really hasn’t moved a lot of copies. My goal was to have it free across all vendors, but when Amazon didn’t price match, I put it in Select. And it’s been hard to tell if I had a rise in sales.

I like the idea of bundling a series of novels. You have put together a set of your novels called Delta Crossroads Trilogy Box Set. What was the impact on your other sales? What was your main objective in bundling your novels?

I wanted to have another product for the algorithms, and more importantly, I wanted to appeal to those readers who prefer box sets. My sales are rising thanks to a recent ad, and I’m selling both individual copies and boxed sets. I think it all depends on the reader’s preference, and it’s a great option to offer readers.

What has been your experience in giving your books away free? Have you been involved in any other type of giveaways and how did that work out? What was your main goal in doing this? Did you run into any obstacles?

Free books are always a good option when you need reviews or have other books the reader will hopefully buy. Most of my free books have been for reviews or for gifts in contests, etc. I’ve been involved in a fair amount of giveaways, and if they are book giveaways, they always go well. They are a good way to cross promote to new readers.

How do you start your book launch process for a new book? Give a brief outline of the steps you go through to get your book to market. What methods were the most successful?

Every launch is different, but in general, I do a print giveaway on Goodreads that starts a couple of weeks before release and ends on release day. Then I create a Facebook event, which is my book launch, and start inviting everyone from Goodreads to it. When the date gets closer, I invite FB friends and my readers help spread the word. My big push is always the Facebook party. I try to keep a fun environment and do contests relevant to the book and give away cool swag. I do trivia from the books, share deleted scenes, etc. They always go well.

You have a great blog. You do a great job keeping readers informed, marketing your books and providing useful information to other writers. What is your primary goal? And where in the world do you find the time to create great novels, take care of the social media and maintain your blog?

Thank you! The blog has actually gone to the sidelines in the past six months because book writing needed to come first. I originally started my blog with the focus on Thriller Thursdays, and true crime, thinking that audience would be my readers. Unfortunately, that didn’t work out. My Thriller Thursday articles were really popular, but they didn’t help book sales and took a lot of time to write. So I switched my focus to just be more about me and my books, trying to connect with readers. I don’t blog as often as I used to, but I still want them to know what’s up with me and make sure I keep things current.

What is your method of getting reviews for your novels? Do you seek professional reviews, use social media or do you rely on your reading audience to supply them?

Professional reviews are tougher for indies, in my experience, because we operate on a faster schedule, and those take a while. I’m lucky enough to have made connections with some great authors who are willing to read in advance. I’ve also found some groups will to read and review on Goodreads, and I’ve cultivated those relationships since my first novel, so now I have a list of about thirty people I send out an advanced copy to. It’s a nice way to jump start the reviewing process. Thank you so much for having me, James!
