HBS Author’s Spotlight – Class of December 2013

This month we have a group of interesting writers with worlds of knowledge and expertise. The author interviews are a MUST read.

Be sure to check out what they have coming next for their readers. I try to pick authors who are interesting studies and ask them unique questions for our Q/A section.

Check out the Showcase feature of the HBS Author's Spotlight. I have included those authors in this class. Thanks to the following outstanding authors for a great month. Also, we are including authors that are a part of our new feature: Boxed Sets.

Here is a summary of our December 2013 crew.

What's next: Presently I am writing the third in the Brandon Fisher FBI Series called The Defenseless. The second in the series, Silent Graves, is working its way through the final edit stages with a professional and I hope to release it the start of the new year.

Social media: ...relationships to me are very important. These are primarily other writers who know what I’m going through, who struggle with the same challenges. I consider these people friends even though the majority I’ve never met face to face.

Covers: When it comes to my cover creative process, I try to go for the feel of the book and match that to a color that creates that energy. From there, my husband makes it happen for me. I’m very spoiled to live with a graphic designer.

Trailers: I’m not sure how much impact book trailers actually have on sales. In all honesty, I’ve never bought a book because of one.

Short stories: I believe that short stories can be utilized as a marketing tool. In fact, I recently made Pearls of Deception, my mystery short, permanently free. It provides the reader with entertainment and gives them a taste of my writing style.

Free Books: Free promotions should always been done with the intention of hooking new readers. I believe it’s a terrific tool to introduce your work, but at the same time shouldn’t be overused.

What's next: The next book in the Liz Talbot series, LOWCOUNTRY BONEYARD will release in September of 2014. Liz has a new case to solve in LOWCOUNTRY BONEYARD.

Social media: I think building social media relationships is pretty important. Also, it’s fun. I enjoy interacting with the interesting people I’ve met through Twitter and Facebook.

Writer support groups: I’m laughing here because I may need an intervention. I’m addicted to writers’ organizations. Aside from Romance Writers of America, I’m a member of Sisters in Crime, Private Eye Writers of America, Mystery Writers of America, South Carolina Writers Workshop… I feel like I’m missing a few.

Short stories: I don’t think the short stories have impacted the sales of the novels. They were all published years before the novels. Honestly, I wrote the short stories when I was learning the business of publishing and someone had told me I needed to get a few short stories published before I tried to sell my first novel.

Blog: Honestly, I feel as though of all the things I do, the blog is the thing that most often gets pushed to the back burner, because there are so many things to be done and a limited amount of time.

Reviews: My publisher sends out review copies and makes the eBooks available on Net Galley. Also, I do a blog tour when the book is released, and those typically result in reviews.

What's next: The next two books I’m going to do are book five and six in the Scot Cullen series.

Book six will be Cowboys and Indians and will be set largely in Edinburgh. Most of my books have tended to wander a bit…

Social media: It’s been really important to me. I’ve had so many fans that I’ve met through Twitter mainly - Facebook terrifies me - including my current editor.

Covers: The covers were done in collaboration with my girlfriend (i.e. unmarried partner!). I’m not much of a photographer or a designer. Broadly, we looked through her collection of photos from the last few years and found shots that matched particular books, e.g. the shot along the promenade in Portobello which is Edinburgh’s seaside district and also where Cullen lives.

Free books: The main goal was to get a profile and get people interested in the subsequent books. I think that’s working, though the pick-up rate from GHOST to DEVIL is something like 5%, which tells me that a lot of the freebie people tend to hoard eBooks. That said, I’ve got pretty healthy sales, so that number of people that love Ghost seem to buy the remainder.

Blog: I try to focus at least 80% of it on the writing, but try to do the blog and newsletter whenever I’ve got a break. I don’t think I’m spending enough time doing it justice but I try to keep it fresh.

Newsletter: It’s more to keep the long-term readers informed of what I’m doing, when stuff’s coming out but also give them something more. For example, I deleted a chapter from the start of Dyed in the Wool and published it through the newsletter, which was well received. I get a lot of good feedback from my readers from it and I enjoy doing it.

Other languages: I’m going to do a German edition, hopefully early next year. My audience there is actually not too bad, with sales over 100 - astonishing when you consider that’s probably foreign language readers…

Next: I’m nearing completion on a new novel, Agency Woman, with release planned for early 2014. This is a psychological thriller set in the Highlands of Scotland.

Social media importance: Yes, 54131 followers now on Twitter. It has taken two years to get to that point. I’ve certainly found readers on Twitter, good people, good connections, sometimes leading to friendships and correspondences. Lots of times I’ve had readers of my ebooks contact me there, letting me know their thoughts, so it has been a very important thing.

Personal appearances: For announcements of future events/appearances, please sign up for my blog (lots of other resources/info/tips for authors and readers there on the blog, too): http://johnaalogan.wordpress.com/2013/02/25/the-story-of-the-survival-of-thomas-ford/

Covers: I spend a lot of time finding a photo/image that I am completely happy with and which I feel represents the spirit of the book. That’s a private, instinctive thing so I don’t show anyone else the cover until the day the book is published/uploaded. I don’t involve anyone else, that way there is no-one to blame but myself if it goes wrong!

Bundling a series of short stories: ... two literary agents I signed up with over the years had always told me they are impossible to sell, they were only interested in my novels.

With epublishing, though, I wanted to test that negative theory. I had nine unpublished short stories which had been written as a series over two years and formed an organic whole, so I put them together with one story which had previously been published by Picador.

Last month was the first when sales of that short story collection, Storm Damage, exceeded sales of the novel, and this was the result of a Bookbub promotion for Storm Damage at the end of October, which I blogged about here: http://authorselectric.blogspot.co.uk/2013/11/bookbub-experiment-3-storm-damage-by.html

Support groups: I’ve been a member of Authors Electric for nearly 2 years now. The 28 members each blog monthly there, the blog gets about 18000 views a month.

UK sales: … because I market online and only sell ebooks this means my biggest audience is in the U.S. But then again, that still leaves a large audience in the rest of the world, and in the UK, and in Scotland locally too. But when I pay for a Bookbub advert I know this means that by far most of the downloads will be in the U.S. Sometimes it’s unpredictable though. On a couple of promotions for The Survival of Thomas Ford, UK sales far exceeded US sales.

What's next: My novella The Bank Manager and the Bum was something of a gamble. However, it seems to have paid off, with 31 positive UK reviews since release in June.

With National Novel Writing Month in November I have decided to write a follow up to it.

Social media: I’d equate social media to being at a party where you are slightly uneasy with the host, but you feel obliged to attend or people will wonder why. Social media in general is a great way of connecting with people and I’ve met some fantastic people through it, but there are also so many negatives to be endured alongside the positives. I try not to overdo it when I have a book launch. A few tweets here and there are about all I do.

Covers: I have to make a distinction here between my Longcroft books, which are published by Byker Books, and my self-published work. Byker are very much in tune with my work and I leave the concept for the covers in their more than capable hands. As for my self-published releases a super talented chap called Steven Miscandlon designs the covers. I give him a couple of vague ideas about what I want and leave it to him. His work is top notch and he is speedy.

Short stories: I’ll be honest in saying that my collection of short stories, Dark Voices, does not sell as well as the Longcroft Tales. Dark Voices was more an attempt to put together a body of work that I have worked on in the last few years. It’s well known that story collections do not sell as well as longer fiction, unless you are Stephen King, of course.

Free books: Most writers hate the idea of giving away their work for free but one has to think of the big picture. There are millions of kindle users out there. Promotions work if tackled in the right way. A well-targeted freebie campaign can lead to very healthy sales after the campaign and positive reviews, which aid sales in the long term.

UK audience: The kind of story I tell lends itself to a British audience, although, The Bank Manager and the Bum is getting some good reviews from US readers at the moment. Marketing online does help to get a larger, global, audience.

Burning Bridges project: There’s an interesting story behind Burning Bridges. A large number of authors, including me, were taken in by a less than reputable publisher, whose name I won’t mention except to say they are currently being sued to the tune of $750,000 dollars. A group of us got together and decided to create a positive from a negative and raise some money for charity whilst burning our metaphorical bridges in print. The driving forces behind creating this anthology were Heath Lowrance and Luis Vera.

Title: DIRTY LITTLE CHRISTMAS

Author Genre: Romance

Author Description:
I don’t have a stepmother, have never been blonde and wouldn’t know how to clean a fireplace if ashes were stacked to the flue. But my road to publication didn’t come overnight or without a lot of disappointment. Yes, I have my Prince Charming (and a little Princess to boot), but other than that, Cinderella and I have nothing in common. Of course, my becoming published did have a lot to do with finding the perfect fit, so who knows? Maybe I do have a fairy godmother somewhere out there.

Born and raised in Florida to a close-knit family of Italian and Cuban descent, I learned never to give up or give in—especially when in pursuit of a lifelong dream. I worked over eight years before Harlequin Temptation bought my first book. But what an adventure it was!

A romance reader from age 16, I knew what kind of stories I wanted to write. I started my first romance in 1988 while in graduate school. Soon after, I joined the workforce as an English teacher in Catholic school, which people always get a kick out of. I wrote at night and on weekends. During breaks. I grabbed every free moment I could.

In 1996, I retired from teaching, joined my family’s manufacturing business and gave myself more time to write. “The call” from Harlequin came in March of 1997 with an offer to publish SEDUCING SULLIVAN, my fourth completed novel.

I discovered my niche with Temptation’s sensuous, sexy tone and character-driven stories. My desire to “push the envelope” worked even better when Harlequin launched the new Blaze series, longer books that gave me the freedom to explore sensual stories with a more intricate plot. In 2003, I sold my first single title series to Pocket’s Downtown Press, which is female action-adventure with a hot romance storyline. I’ve written novellas for Pocket, Signet and Harlequin. In 2008, I launched a three-book series of paranormal romances and also wrote one of the first-ever “real life” romances for HCI/True Vows in 2010. In 2011, Harlequin published my first ever three-book, back-to-back series, Legendary Lovers. I’m also in the middle of digitally re-releasing several of my backlist books myself. No rest for the weary!

Title: GUARANTEED JUSTICE

Author Genre: Mystery & Thrillers, Romance, Science Fiction & Fantasy

Website: M.A. Comley
Twitter: @Melcom1
Goodreads: Check Out Goodreads
Facebook: Check Out Facebook
Pinterest: Check Out Pinterest

Author Description:
Independent writers have known for some time that the publishing world is changing. No longer do writers have to await the whim of an agent and then a publisher before their cherished work sees the light of day.

This is a double edged sword, of course. It means that a lot of drivel is out there on Kindle and self-published. But it also means that complete gems have come to the attention of readers who would never have had the chance to read the author concerned. Some of these authors have attracted the attention of agents who, attracted by the author’s sales figures, have decided to jump in and offer a contract before someone else does. One of these authors is Mel Comley, a Brit living in rural France. Ms Comley gave up her job in retail a decade ago and, in the wake of a traumatic divorce, moved with her mother to a country they had never even previously visited.

After renovating a few houses, she decided on a different path. Ms Comley took a creative writing course, following her life’s dream, and began to write.

Months turned into years and she, at first, saw little success. Rejection followed rejection.

But if there is something to be said about Ms Comley, it is her solid work ethic and her determination never to give up. “It’s tough when you’re first starting out. You have no idea if you’re any good. I started off writing romances and I had a good response from Mills and Boon for one, but then I decided to change tack to thrillers.”

She uploaded her new crime novel, Impeding Justice, to the wannabe writer site, Authonomy and waged a fierce campaign, spending all day, every day, in front of her computer to get her novel to the top of the chart and under the gaze of a Harper Collins.

Authonomy is a networking site as much as a talent site and Mel worked hard to see that her story of a British female cop chasing down murder, kidnap and human trafficking was as recognised as it should have been.

Author Description:
I'm a third-generation Californian who migrated from southern Cal to northern Cal. What I like most about my state is that one can go from the ocean to the mountains in one day, with a lunch stop in the desert. I like it so much I've set my forensic geology books in those settings.

I'm author of a US History textbook, and have contributed to texts in the sciences. I've done tech-writing for the Silicon Valley computer industry, and that experience hatched an idea that became my first novel, about an attempt to sabotage the nation's telephone system.

I went in a different direction with the Forensic Geology Series, taking mystery into outdoor adventure and thriller territory.

Author Description:
I was seven when I got my first set of oil paints for Christmas, and from that point on, I was an obsessive-compulsive art geek. But like most of my novelist colleagues, I also wrote a lot while I was growing up–short stories, but also plays and teleplays, often in collaboration with my twin sister, Pam (she’s the evil one). Many of the latter were Star Trek scripts in which Mr. Spock overcomes his lack of emotions to find true love, usually with someone a lot like me, but without the braces, glasses, and preadolescent complexion issues.

My subject matter had evolved into garden-variety late-adolescent angst by the time I started attending SUNY Stony Brook, where I was lucky enough to be taught creative writing by novelist/screenwriter Richard “No adverbs!” Price. But I was still pretty much hung up on art, so after a couple of years, I transferred to the San Francisco Art Institute.

Upon returning to New York after graduation, I learned that a resume that lists a BFA in painting and a couple of menial college jobs produces more snickers than offers on the part of prospective employers. My solution, for some reason, was to trade my paint-crusted jeans and T-shirts for panty hose and a business suit so that I could labor seventy hours a week as a paralegal in a high-powered Manhattan sweatsh– uh, law firm. When I’d enjoyed about as much of that as I could stand, I took a gigundo pay cut to switch to publishing, where I ended up as promotion manager for a small division of a large NYC publishing house (now sadly defunct) called Van Nostrand Reinhold.
